FBI Investigates Cybertruck Explosion Linked to Colorado Springs

Federal authorities are conducting an active investigation in Colorado Springs in connection with a recent explosion outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, which involved a Tesla Cybertruck. According to reports from KRDO, the man behind the wheel of the vehicle rented from Colorado Springs is now under investigation by the FBI.

The explosion, which took place around 8:40 a.m. on January 1, 2025, led to the death of the driver and injuries to seven others. Law enforcement officials have identified the explosion as a possible act of terrorism, with investigators discovering fireworks-style mortars and a fuel canister in the truck.

FBI sources confirmed that the rented Cybertruck was obtained through the Turo car rental service, the same company involved in a separate incident in New Orleans on the same day. ABC News reports that the man who rented the vehicle from Colorado Springs had arrived in Las Vegas on January 1, after driving from Colorado Springs on December 30.

As part of the ongoing investigation, federal agents executed a search operation in Colorado Springs. Authorities sealed off the area around a residence in the Eastside Landing Condo Complex, located near Antelope Ridge Drive and Stetson Hills Boulevard in northeast Colorado Springs. Local media, including KRDO 13, reported seeing numerous FBI agents and black vehicles surrounding the area during the morning of January 2.

Neighbors expressed shock upon learning that the person connected to the Las Vegas explosion had lived in the complex. One local resident remarked, "The (suspect) lived here? That's crazy. There might be explosives in there."

The FBI's Response and Investigation

The FBI is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Law enforcement officials continue to work to identify the suspect and uncover the motive behind the explosion. As of now, the suspect remains unidentified, but investigators are focusing on understanding how the incident may be connected to terrorism.

Turo (the car rental company that facilitated the Cybertruck rental) issued a statement expressing sympathy for the victims and confirming its cooperation with law enforcement. The company emphasized that neither of the renters involved in the Las Vegas and New Orleans incidents had a criminal background that would have flagged them as security risks.

As federal authorities continue their investigation, details about the suspect and their connection to Colorado Springs are still unfolding. The tragic event has raised significant questions about security in car rental services and the potential for future incidents involving rented vehicles.
