We have a bit of time before the leaves start to change color and the air gets a bit crisper; it's time to start thinking about transitioning your home from the heat of summer to the cooler, cozier days of fall. Preparing your home for fall not only ensures comfort but also helps you address maintenance issues before winter arrives. Here are some essential tips to get your home ready for the autumn season.

Inspect and Clean the Gutters

One of the first tasks to tackle is cleaning your gutters. Falling leaves and debris can clog your gutters, leading to water damage and ice dams when temperatures drop. Use a sturdy ladder to remove leaves, sticks, and other debris. Rinse the gutters with a hose to ensure proper water flow and check for any leaks or damage that might need repair.

Check Your Heating System

Before the cold sets in, have your heating system inspected and serviced by a professional. Change the filters in your furnace, and if you have a fireplace, have it cleaned and inspected as well. This not only ensures efficient heating but also reduces the risk of fire hazards.

Reverse Ceiling Fans

Many people don’t realize that ceiling fans can help with heating in the fall and winter. Reverse the direction of your ceiling fans to run clockwise at a low speed. This will push the warm air that rises to the ceiling back down into the room, improving circulation and keeping your home warmer.

Prepare Your Outdoor Space

Fall is a great time to clean and store outdoor furniture. Clean and cover patio furniture or move it indoors to protect it from the elements. Store garden hoses and turn off exterior faucets to prevent them from freezing and bursting. Also, inspect walkways and driveways for cracks and seal them to prevent further damage from freezing and thawing cycles.

Improve Insulation

Proper insulation is key to maintaining a warm home. Check your attic insulation and add more if necessary. Insulate exposed pipes to prevent them from freezing and bursting. This small investment can save you a lot of money on heating bills and potential repair costs.

Clean and Inspect Your Roof

Your roof takes a lot of abuse during the fall and winter months. Inspect your roof for missing or damaged shingles and replace them as needed. Cleaning off debris like leaves and branches can prevent damage and leaks. If you’re uncomfortable doing this yourself, consider hiring a professional.

While it seems early in the season, making sure you are making appointments and getting things checked will put you ahead of the curve, and you won't have to stress as the season begins to change.
